This trek is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, as it fully reveals the magnitude and beauty of the snow-capped peaks and lakes of the Cordillera Huayhuash, including Yerupajá, the second-highest mountain in Peru, and Siula Grande, made famous by climber Joe Simpson in Touching the Void.

This program is designed for hiking enthusiasts, combined with the ascent of a non-technical mountain, Pumarinri (5,465 m).

Itinerary


Day 01: Huaraz - Chiquian - Llamac - Pocpa - Quartelhuain (4,180 m)
Transport to the south of Huaraz. Along the way, we will pass through several traditional villages before arriving at Quartelhuain, where we will set up our first camp.

Day 02: Quartelhuain - Cacananpunta Pass (4,700 m) - Mitucocha
We left Quartelhuain heading towards our first pass Cacananpunta, to finally arrive at the camp in Mitucocha.

  • Campsite: Mitucocha (4,230 m)
Day 03: Mitucocha - Punta Carhuac Pass (4,650 m) - Laguna Carhuacocha
On this day, we head toward the second pass, Carhuac, from where we will have spectacular views of the Siula and Yerupajá snow-capped peaks, and finally arrive at Carhuacocha.

Day 04: Carhuacocha - Siula Pass (4,800 m) - Huayhuash
On this day, we will enjoy excellent views of the Quesillococha, Siula, and Gangrajanca lakes, the famous photograph of the Huayhuash trek where three lakes can be seen together.

Day 05: Huayhuash - Portachuelo Pass (4,770 m) - Laguna Viconga (Thermal Baths Guñog)
On this day, the hike takes us toward the southernmost point of the Cordillera Huayhuash, where we will ascend to Portachuelo Pass, offering a view of the Raura mountain range. We will then arrive at Laguna Viconga and the thermal baths. "On this day, we can relax in the thermal waters."

Day 06: Viconga - Cumbre Nevado Pumarinri (5,427 m) - Cuyocpampa
On this day, our goal is to ascend to the summit of Nevado Pumarinri.

  • Campsite: Cuyocpampa (4,560 m)
Day 07: Cuyocpampa (4,560 m) - Santa Rosa Pass (5,060 m) - Huayllapa (3,600 m)
On this day, we will cross Santa Rosa Pass, the highest point of the trek, before descending to Cutatambo and continuing on to the village of Huayllapa, a typical village of the region. Here, it will be possible to purchase drinks and/or food.

  • Campsite: Huayllapa (3,600 m)
Day 08: Huayllapa (3,600 m snm) – Tapush Pass (4,790 msnm) - Gashpapampa (4,560 m)
On this day, we will hike uphill toward Punta Tapush Pass (4,790 m), from where we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Diablo Mudo snow-capped peak (5,350 m).

  • Campsite: Gashpapampa (4,560 m)
Day 09: Gashpapampa (4,560 m) – Punta Llaucha Pass (4,850 m) - Laguna Jahuacocha (4,100 m)
On this day, our hike will take us to Llaucha Pass (4,850 m), where we will enjoy an impressive view of the following snow-capped peaks: Rondoy, Ninashanca, Jirishanca, Yerupajá Chico, Yerupajá Grande, Rasac, and Siula.

  • Campsite: Jahuacocha (4,100 m)
Day 10: Laguna Jahuacocha - Pampa Llamac Pass (4,270 m) - Llamac - Huaraz
On this final day, we will descend through the Huayllan Valley, passing between ichus and quenuales (types of Andean vegetation), until we reach the village of Llamac, where our transport will be waiting to take us back to the city of Huaraz.

  • Briefing: Before your expedition, you will have a briefing at your hotel or our office with your guide and other participants in your group.
  • Transportation: From your hotel in Huaraz to the starting point of the trek, and from the end of the trek to your hotel in Huaraz.
  • Equipment: We use the best quality mountain tents (2 people per tent) and personal mat. Single tents are available USD 60. Additional charge
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner (option for vegetarians or vegans).
  • All kitchen and dining equipment are provided so that clients to enjoy their meals, including chairs and dishes.

  • Cook: Experienced mountain cook (varied and nutritious meals)
  • Arriero: In charge of loading the donkeys and driving them. (*)
  • Donkeys: The number of donkeys depends on the size of the group. (*)
  • Porter: It is necessary to use porters from the base camp to the high camp. They carry the tents, food, climbing equipment, etc. But each one must carry their personal equipment.
  • Collective climbing equipment (ropes, carabiners, stakes, screws)
  • Emergency horse: A horse will be available with the muleteers in case of emergencies for evacuation purposes.

  1. Where do the hikes start and end?

  2. The hikes start and end in the city of Huaraz - Ancash.

  3. How to get to Huaraz?

  4. By air: Anta Airport (ATA, Comandante FAP Germán Arias Graziani Airport) is currently only for domestic flights, so all international travelers by air must disembark in Lima and go through customs.

    • The best way to get to Huaraz is by air, currently there is only one airline operating: LATAM.
    • Flight time: 1 hour 10 minutes.
    By land: This is the most common route, with a paved road of 404 km from Lima. Try to book the bus cama service for a more comfortable journey and rest during the trip.

  5. What is the recommended season for trekking in Peru?

  6. The recommended months for the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash are from May to October. Although the trek can be done all year round, you just need good clothing to protect yourself from the rains.

  7. Planning a trip and looking for a group trek?
